Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
Service Description
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy developed by Francine Shapiro over 30 years ago. It is widely used to support people experiencing trauma, as well as a range of emotional and behavioural difficulties in both children and adults. When someone experiences something traumatic, the brain and body respond instinctively to protect them. Sometimes, these experiences are not fully processed and can become “stuck” in their original, distressing form. This may lead to intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, nightmares, or heightened emotional responses, and can make it more difficult to manage everyday stress. EMDR is delivered by a trained therapist and works by supporting the brain to reprocess these experiences, allowing them to be stored as past memories rather than continuing to trigger distress in the present. Many people find this can lead to a reduction in symptoms and an improvement in overall emotional wellbeing. If you are interested in exploring EMDR, we can connect you with a therapist trained in this approach. They will arrange an initial assessment to explore whether EMDR is appropriate for your needs.
